Delana Hope – Search Me First Lyrics

David prayed.
Search me, oh God, and know my heart.
Try me, and know my thoughts.

That’s a dangerous prayer,
Because it’s easy to ask God to show me what’s wrong with everybody else.
But today, I’m not asking about them.
Lord, search me.

I’ve seen the faults in everybody.
I’ve noticed every wrong.
I’ve questioned who was really living right and who was just playing along.
I’ve had something to say about it.
I’ve called it discernment, too.
But while I was examining everybody, God…
What did you see in me?

Maybe I’ve been so busy looking at the speck in someone else’s eye,
That I never stood before your mirror long enough to look inside.
Before I call their name…
Before I point to what I see…
Lord, turn the light around and shine it first on me.

Search me first.
Before I speak on anybody else, search me first.
Lord, show me myself.
If there’s pride in me, take it out.
If there’s bitterness, bring it out.
If there’s anything in my heart that doesn’t look like you, search me first.

Search me first.
Before I ask you to deal with them, God…
Deal with me.

I can know the word and quote it, and still miss what it says to me.
I can recognize somebody else’s wrong, and overlook my own so easily.
I can call myself discerning, while becoming critical inside.
I can tell the truth without enough love, and convince myself I’m right.
But I don’t want to know scripture and never let scripture change me.
If I’m gonna carry your name, Lord, let your character be seen in me.

Search my motives.
Search my intentions.
Search what I do when nobody’s looking.
Search how I speak.
Search how I love.
Search how I treat the ones I disagree with.
And if I have become everything I’m preaching against, Lord, don’t let me hide from it.
Correct me, clean me, change me, start with me.

Create in me a clean heart, oh God.
Before I preach it…
Before I post it…
Before I say what you showed me about somebody else…
Search me first.
